Thread: Example of Custom Version With Notes?

  1. #1

Default Example of Custom Version With Notes?

Can someone please provide an example for a .txt that includes how to use notes?

I am helping someone that has done a literal translation with foot notes. How would I include them?

    e.g.

Mat 2:4. And having gathered All the high priests and scribes of the people, he was inquiring from them where the Christ is born1.

    Note:

    1. Literally, “begotten.”

Also, would the note numbers have to continue to increase throughout the whole NT?

What about hovering over the note number, how can you display tool tips?

    Thank you.

You could find a version that uses notes like you would like to use them. You could export the version and its notes to a text file and use that text file as an example of how to do it. You could see the uncompiled text in text in the file and the compiled text in the browse window.

There are probably instuctions in the help file, but that is how I have learned to make the versions that I have made.

    Here is a simple example:
    Gen 3:20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve,<N1> because she would become the mother of everyone living. {<sup>1</sup> “Life”}

Hi Mark, thank you for your reply. That kind of works. How can you make it more directed at the word you want noted and not the whole verse?

    Hi drhoads,

Chapter 67 Compiling Version Databases in the BibleWorks Help File contains an example from the NAS for how to include notes and Strong's numbers in a version. You will also want to read that chapter in full, as there is additional information that you will want to consider as you create your version. The notes in the NAS example will have the note number wherever you place it in the text, though the note content will appear in the Analysis Tab. The note content does not appear immediately next to the word. That would require using one of the other note options called Embedded Notes. That is not a common option, and I suggest using the standard End Notes option.

    Blessings,

To answer your other questions, you can increment the note numbers within each verse, within each chapter, each book, or the entire version. Within each verse or chapter would probably be best, as this way the numbers won't become too large are take up too much space within the verse.

There is no way to include popup tool tips for notes within the Browse Window. The Help File chapter 67 lists the various options and methods that can be used to display note content.

You may want to look at many of the versions included in BibleWorks to see how notes have been implemented. I used various techniques to include chapter introductions, section headings (such as in the Song of Solomon), etc. When you find a verse containing a feature that you want to emulate, export that verse using the Tools | Importing/Exporting Information | Export Database tool, then choose the version and verse that you want to export. Be sure to check the box to export Notes with it, and export as a TXT file (or CCAT for Greek and Hebrew). Some versions you might want to look at are the NET Bible and the SFB15. They have some unusual note features in them. Check the beginning of Bible books, some of the verses in Song of Solomon, the Psalm book collections, etc. These should give you some ideas. You don't always have to include note numbers in order to have notes appear in the text. I have also use asterisk * or the letter x at times as note numbers, but I can't recall right now which versions include that feature.

    Blessings,

The placement of the note <N1> shows which word(s) your note covers. You can put footnotes on every word, if<N1> you<N2> want<N3>. In the analysis window the notes can be divided by having notes on separate lines or they can be kept on the same line. Help chapter 47 will give you all the details.
