What is lacking in the Study Guides?

In order to better provide training for you in using BibleWorks in your studies, I would like to know what Study Guides you would like to see included in the program.

This is no guarantee that I will be able to provide each of these requests, or how soon I will be able to meet these needs, but it will help me to see where information is lacking.

Stuff on Bible Genre:

Broad Strokes: Expository vs. Literary
Detailed Strokes: Anything on the individual forms/genres.

Genre [Literary Design] is on every single page of The Good Book.

For a list of initial categories, Eliott Johnson's book would be a great place to start. JMHO.

FYI--I took a Ph.D. class on Hermeneutics with Dr. Johnson and Dr. Bock. It was a fun class, esp. since the profs have different approaches on certain topics. They interacted well together. I have Dr. Johnson's book, and I will take a look at it. Dr. Johnson is a very, very gracious man. I don't believe I have ever seen anyone accept criticism as graciously as he does.

Great post. Elliott Johnson was an unexpected, but total blessing for me. I didn't go to DTS specifically for hermeneutics, but when I started taking classes from him and read his book - WOW!, my eyes were opened. There is so much happening on each page of the Bible, in addition to the languages.

I'll bet the Ph.D. class was Superb! It might be a lie if I were to say "I'm not jealous."

I've been a user of BW for forever, but I always go through the tutorials when I get a new version. And I always learn something new.

Many of the questions that are asked here would not be asked if one went through the videos first. That's not to discourage asking questions, but merely an observation.

However, I would like to see a more advanced section in the tutorials, if you could work it into your time allotment. In other words, you could have an advanced section in the tutorials devoted entirely to demonstrating some of the more complicated and advanced features of BW.

An example would be the GSE, for one. You could have several videos demonstrating the various uses of the GSE.

And so forth.

Even if you don't add this, however, I am a big believer in the tutorials and encourage everyone, new and old user alike, to avail himself of them.

I agree that more advanced videos would be helpful. Comparing and advanced usage of word lists, GSE, more on using the Parallel BHS and LXX, how to best use the tabs. (I have a tab for Philo, AF and Josephus for when I use a cross version search). I am sure there are more advanced and better uses that I have not thought of.

I also would like the videos referenced by feature, not just by task and integrated into the online help. I posted this in the poll thread, but will present it here as well.

KWIC has a good video, however if I am in the KWIC press F1 for the online help, there is no reference to that video. I have to go back into the study guides and try and figure out which task this is presented under.

Anyway.. keep them coming.

Well, I've been a BW user for many years myself. And I never usually made it a habit to actually go through "all" the videos. I would just view the ones I felt I needed to. When I read that Scott went through them all, I thought I'd give it a try. I just want to say thank you Scott for the idea because I never realized that I was missing so much of what BW does by not viewing "all" of them. Now I can say, "yes" by all means I'd like to see an advanced section of tutorials as well so I can learn that much more.

Same here. In the year of our Lord 2007, I operate on the assumption that whatever I think of, someone else already has. For instance, I think "It would be nice to be able to highlight the electronic text." I go to the BW7 software, they've already thought of it. So there's that.

Then there's the fact that after all these years, I know I'm not using MS Office to the fullest extent, only because I've never taken the time to learn all it does. Why not? Don't care. I can get everything done that I want to (I think?).

So, I no longer want to operate on the latter software assumption. I have no idea what I want to get done in BW7 until I see everything it can do. Was I "getting by" before? Yes. Am I way better off now? Is cheese pizza better with lots of meaty toppings?

I now use the "new to me" tools and modules and the logic behind them as presented in both the videos and online tutorials. I'm way beyond "getting by." I hate cliche's, but the status quo has got to go.

One final word: Batman has a lot of cool gadgets in his utility belt. He knows them all and he uses them all. Skillfully. When it comes to BW7, someday I'd like to be able to say, "I'm Batman."
