This remark on Yiddish is interesting

Linguistically, Yiddish is largely based on Middle High German with some Hebrew words and other words from languages like Polish, etc., in it. It is commonly written in Hebrew letters. Yiddish is the language of Jewish people in Eastern Europe but is also heard in Israel, USA due to migration waves now and then.

Some years ago, I was paying a visit to Kraków City in Poland. In the streets, I found some old houses bearing the names of their (former?) (Jewish?) owners in Yiddish - engraved in the wall and publicly visible in the street.

I have some difficulties understanding Yiddish if spoken too fast despite some knowledge of German.

Unfortunately, I do not speak any Iwrith (Modern Hebrew). I can read (and understand most of) Biblical Hebrew.

More or less the same for Arabic. Because of my parental background, I have had an Islamic education at home and thus I can read and understand most of Qur`anic Arabic. But I would not claim that I am very fluent in Colloquial (Standard) Arabic. No practice. Anyway, I think I am much more at home in Korean, Chinese and Swahili and fluent than in "my" Arabic.

In my civil profession as a (former) university professor I have been a linguist - teaching Linguistic Science, stuff like Chomsky (outdated these days, I think), etc. That kind of job and interest in the subject matter determines a person like me to learn as many foreign languages as possible - with varying degrees of proficiency, of course.

Currently, as I am working for our College Project here in Nairobi, I have taken a strong interest in local (African) Bantu languages that in some ways are similar to Swahili. We have a number of Bible Translation Projects for languages in the Democratic Republic of Congo (not in Kenya) with groups of up to 90 000 speakers only. Other Bible Societies have not shown any real interest to invest in Bible Translation projects for such "small" language groups.

For Kenyan local languages and traditional tribal cultures, we ask our students to research and write on their traditional tribal languages, cultures and religions. Most of that knowledge may be gone and become extinct in an number of decades and as knowledge become lost to mankind in the ongoing process of modernisation in this part of the world. In scientific literature, such things had never been thoroughly recorded. Our students are (mostly) Christians and pastors or priests. But it is clear that they should not preach and practice the Western form of Christianity but their African version of it.

Christians from the West must get used to respecting the African identity of Christianity. And as we educate and train another generation of African-based Christians, we hope to avoid some of the failures in Western Christian Theology - being prejudiced and stigmatizing those who are not "Christian" or not Christian the same way main stream churches in the West are.
