View Full Version : Link BW8 w/ Logos 4 TDNT?

Hi all

I was happily linking to TDNT in Logos 3 via the external link manager from the instructions in this thread (http://www.bibleworks.com/forums/showthread.php?3622-Question-re-external-links&p=16945#post16945), but then I thought I'd take a look at Logos 4 and ... now my links won't work.

The link will call Logos 4, but it won't work anymore. I saw something in another thread saying that Logos 4 links are problematic. Is that still true?

It also appears that the link will only call Logos 4, not Logos 3 ... if I can't get the external link working in L4, does anyone know how to make it point to L3?

Thanks!

Well, doing a little digging, here is the BW link that used to launch TDNT in Logos 3 at the right word.

libronixdls:macro|name=TextKeyLink|text=<dummy>|lang=el|scheme=beta|res="TDNT"

And this is how Logos 4 creates a URL to a specific word in TDNT (palaios)

logosres:tdnt;ref=GreekStrongs.3819

I am not sure if that might help anyone help me to get my launch tool working again, but here is an old style (Logos 3) link to an article in BibSac

libronixdls:jump%7Cpos%3DLLS-AOL%253A716%253CDIV113%253E.5297.0%7Cref%3Dvp.131. 228%7Cres%3DLLS%253Ags_bsac_131

And a Logos 4 link to the same article

logosres:gs-bsac-131;ref=VolumeNumberPage.V_131,_N_523,_p_228

So obviously there is quite a difference in the way these links are made.

I'm just posting this here in case someone has a bit more understanding of how this works than me and can help me set up a new link launch in BW.

Thanks!

Just to update this thread, in case anyone is interested, I have been talking to some folks in the Logos forums and think I am making some progress... but no solution to my problem yet.

I do have a work around, however.

In the External Links Manager, there is a preset for Logos NA27 which calls the Nestle Aland 27 w/ Gramcord Greek New Testament in Logos. This was already in the External Links Manager when I installed BW, I think. (I know I didn't come up with it.)

This link, when activated, brings up the correct passage in the NA 27 in Logos 4.

From there I can right click the word I want and get to the Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains. The DBL has links to the appropriate TDNT entry.

So... three or four clicks (depending on my right click context in NA 27) and I can get to the TDNT entry.

I'm still puzzling away at it, trying to find the convenience of one click from BW to TDNT, but this will work for now.

Don, thanks for all this great conversation, even if it is to yourself! :) It is helpful.

Any good swimming beaches near Victoria? Must be cold in the Pacific that far north, huh? Or is that eh?

Yes, that would be eh, eh?

There are some lovely beaches part way up our Island, Vancouver Island in Parksville and Qualicum. The water is very shallow there, and goes out quite a way so in the summer it is fairly warm. The summer is a bit short, though. On the Pacific side, the beaches in Tofino are great also, but I get the impression they are colder. They also talk about an undertow, so be careful. Not much between us and Japan on that side.

If I get more info on this issue, I'll pass it along. And of course, any geniuses (genii?) are welcome to help us all out.

Thanks Don. Yes, I have heard that Tofino is beautiful. I've never gotten off the mainland though. I've been to Grey Rocks. That was nice. In the Vancouver area, Granville Island is beautiful and very charming. Vancouver has some out of this world restaurants. Not to mention, probably the best fish and seafood anywhere.

I got a reply tonight from the Logos forums which included this information:

Logos 4v1 creates links to headwords in TDNT, and the exact syntax depends on the selected index within TDNT. Some examples:

Link1 (logosres:tdnt;ref=GreekStrongs.246;off=534) = logosres:tdnt;ref=GreekStrongs.246;off=534
Link2 (logosres:tdnt;hw=$CE$B1$CC$94$CE$BC$CE$B1$CF$81$C F$84$CE$B9$CC$81$CE$B1) = logosres:tdnt;hw=$CE$B1$CC$94$CE$BC$CE$B1$CF$81$CF $84$CE$B9$CC$81$CE$B1
Link3 (logosres:tdnt;ref=TDNT.Vol._1,_Pg._267;off=1578) = logosres:tdnt;ref=TDNT.Vol._1,_Pg._267;off=1578
Link4 (logosres:tdnt;ref=VolumePage.V_1,_p_267;off=1578) = logosres:tdnt;ref=VolumePage.V_1,_p_267;off=1578

For the example of Link2 above, I do not know what the hex-bytes are about. I do not know if they are some internal hash code for that resource, or if they are Unicode for the actual Greek Lemma. I have not attempted to see what if anything I get if I use pairs of hex codes and assume they might be Unicode characters. I expect someone will document or explore that one day. If its an internal raw code, then the only way to get a valid reference will be to have Logos4 create it for you. If its a "simple" mapping to Unicode of the lemma, then an external application or program script could, in principle, build such a link.

I wonder if that information might help in enabling an external link via BW?

Is it possible to turn the lemma BW currently exports into some kind of hex code that Logos4 would accept?

Or alternatively is it possible to send a Strong's number from one of the English versions that have embedded Strong's numbers?

I've read your thoughts here with interest. Also I've looked at the Logos forums as well. It appears that L4 uses UTF-8 codes.

Your example of "Link2" above is a set of UTF-8 hex codes that correspond to each letter.

I've been able to get it go directly to any word in the TDNT by manually coding it, but it would appear that BW does not supply the correct kind of unicode when you select "Lemma." So far I've been unable to determine exactly what BW sends and have not been able to locate that in the help.

So, it seems that the key to this working again is to have BW send the UTF-8 codes for the Lemma.

After Eric's comment above, I sent in a request to BW about exporting Unicode. I received this reply:

Dear Pastor Johnson,
Thank you for writing and for your suggestion. The technology permitting, we want to convert to Unicode eventually, but we'll need to ask your patience, because we have a lengthy list of good suggestions to implement and not very many implementers.

Please continue to submit suggestions. BibleWorks is what it is largely because of the excellent suggestions received from its customer community.

Sincerely,
Rick Gross

After asking and receiving permission from Rick to post his reply here, he added:

If any of those writing have further comments or suggestions, we’re happy to receive them as well.

Thanks for the response Rick! I hope that this might be implemented soon, but in the meantime, we do have some ways to work around it.

Hey Don, thanks so much for the heads up. I hate to belabor you with this follow up question, but could you please just lay out the steps involved in creating the link in BW to the resource in Logos? And the link string? Thanks!

Here is the setup (I had to have my hand held getting this set up right in Feb 2009 - see this (http://www.bibleworks.com/forums/showthread.php?3622-Question-re-external-links)thread)

In your external links dialog (Resources | Edit external links ...), these are the settings you need:

BibleWorks provides: Lemma

... with this text type: Greek Text

Menu Location or Event: Browse Window Greek

Map verses using ...: NULL

Menu entry text: Logos TDNT

Web page, File to open, or executable to be run:
libronixdls:macro|name=TextKeyLink|text=*<dummy>|lang=el|scheme=beta|res="TDNT"

Parameters: NULL

Description: TDNT

The "Web page..." is the key for inserting the link, here it is again:

libronixdls:macro|name=TextKeyLink|text=*<dummy>|lang=el|scheme=beta|res="TDNT"

Please note that there should be no spaces in this string.

Hope that helps.

Thanks very much, Don! I am going to set up the link.

By the way, did you enjoy the 'Golden Goal' last February? (i.e., Crosby on Miller in overtime)

Thank you, Don! Now that we have the paradigm, we should be able to get a few other ones linked up. Eg, I have the Exegetical Dictionary of the NT in Logos, and I simply needed to replace the "TDNT" with "EXGDCTNT"

Now, I'm still having trouble linking to a verse in the SESB NA27 critical edition I have in Logos. It still keeps want to open up my old Libronix Logos3 (which I haven't yet uninstalled). Do you have a list of "macro|name" functions?

Based on your model, I'm trying something like this >
libronixdls:macro|name=KeyLink|ref=[en]bible:<book>%20<chapter>%3A<verse>|res="NA27GBS"
but that still wants to open open Logos3.

Mark, I believe the "Libronixdls" that you have at the beginning of your string is code for Libronix (or Logos) 3.

Yes, but I think it is also the same for Logos4. Note that it is used in Don's example which does correctly open Logos4 for me. The "macro|name" parameter is new, however.

Well, yes, but not directly... my brother was returning from a trip to Israel that day, our services end in the afternoon, so I was driving up Vancouver Island that afternoon to preach for his evening service. My sister called me as soon as Crosby scored. I actually only took time to watch the game a few weeks ago... getting me prepped for the new hockey season.

Here is the link I have in BW, I don't know where I got it, maybe from someone here? Can't remember...

Map verses using ...: KJV

Menu entry text: Logos NA27

This works for me.

I, too, have Logos 3 installed, but I no longer call it with any of my BW links... don't know why it is doing that for you. I think in my experiments further up the thread I sometimes called Logos 3 by making some changes to my link, but I can't recall exactly how that happened.

Watching that game would certainly achieve the goal of priming the pump for the new NHL season! I would assume you're a Canucks fan.

Ah, I gotcha! You gotta love those kids (Taylor Hall, Magnus Pajaarvi, and Jordan Eberle)! The Oilers are looking good for years to come! It's like the 1980s version of the Oilers starting all over again! Shall we say "the second coming" of the Oilers? Naw, I guess that title is already taken. But they do have the makings of the next up-and-coming great team (provided they keep building on what they have). Tom Rennie, in my opinion, is one of the best coaches. My Pens are not looking too good these days.

Alright, I don't know what I am doing wrong, I tried to set everything up the way it is described on this thread, yet my Logos 4 keeps looking for an English transliteration of the Greek word which I am trying to find. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Never mind, I found the problem, I had a space in the link which I didn't see originally. All is well.

Okay, now that I've used Logos4 for a while, and upgraded to the great BW9, its time to try to get my links working again. I see some discussion on BW forums, but nothing conclusive.

I've already updated my registry link to Logos4. The TDNT call with a Greek word seems to work.
But I'm still getting calls that open up Libronix3. I'm guessing that something is in error so version 4 doesn't pick it up.
I had one for Enlish dictionay lookup, which, even with a Logos4 resource ID, always opens up Libronix3:
[Logos MW Dictionary Lookup]
Operation = Open
Directory = NULL
File = libronixdls:keylink|ref=text.<dummy>|res="MWDICT11.logos4"
Parameters = NULL
MenuLocation = Browse Window English
TextType = Latin Text
MapToVersion = NULL
Lookup = Form
MenuText = Logos-Dictionary Lookup
Enabled = 1

Any ideas from those that have already plowed some of this ground?
Thanks.

Greg,
Try using this:

libronixdls:jump|ref=[en]topic:<dummy>|res=LLS:46.10.22 It opens Webster's in Logos 4 for me. The support info in Logos 4 for Webster's is:

LLS:46.10.22
2011-02-01T23:35:30Z
MWDICT11.logos4

If you notice the link to Metzger that BWorks provided, reads: libronixdls:jump|ref=[en]bible:<book> <chapter>%3A<verse>|res=LLS:29.3.12

The support info in Logos 4 for Metzger's is
LLS:29.3.12
2009-10-27T03:33:30Z
TCGNT.logos4

My links to other resources are here: http://www.bibleworks.com/forums/showthread.php?4995-External-Links-to-Logos
I should have started that thread in Linking BibleWorks to websites and other programs. Let me know if this helps or not.
