View Full Version : Lexical Translation Concordance

Greetings in Christ, brethren!
I have a particular request to generate a dynamic report of distinct English word(s) rendered in a given translation for a given lemma in the original. The objective is something similar to the Enhanced Strong's Lexicon (ESL), which for example reports:

1249 διάκονος [diakonos] 31 occurrences; AV translates as “minister” 20 times, “servant” eight times, and “deacon” three times.

A quick search on the lemma for diakonos (using BGM) yields 29 hits in 27 verses. What I am interested in is seeing how the NAS, ESV, NKJ, KJV, RSV, etc. renders this term.

The report may look something like this:
diakonos@n??p* [12 occurrences]
NASB: servants [9 occurrences] (Matt 22:13; John 2:5, 9; 1 Cor 3:5; 2 Cor 3:6; 6:4; 11:15, 23), deacons [3 occurrences] (Phil 1:1; 1 Tim 3:8, 12).
ESV: attendants [1 occurrence] (Matt 22:13), servants [7 occurrences] (John 2:5, 9; 1 Cor 3:5; 2 Cor 6:4; 11:15, 23), ministers [1 occurrence] (2 Cor 3:6), deacons [3 occurrences] (Phil 1:1; 1 Tim 3:8, 12).
KJV: servants [3 occurrences] (Matt 22:13; John 2:5, 9), ministers [6 occurrences] (1 Cor 3:5; 2 Cor 3:6; 6:4; 11:15, 23), deacons [3 occurrences] (Phil 1:1; 1 Tim 3:8, 12).

It seems that this may easily be accomplished by leveraging Strong's number tags (if a given translation has them) or utilize a reverse-interlinear mapping. I am very interested in this mechanism and would be willing to develop something that is capable of generating such a report if the necessary tags/reverse-interlinear mappings were somehow accessible/available via the "bibleworks.automation" interface (or other API if available). Lastly, a reverse lookup would be very interesting as well (i.e. search on the word "servants" in the NASB and report how many different Greek words "servants" translates)!

After reviewing the following posts, I did not find exactly what I am looking for:
