Abnormal termination

Abnormal termination

Post by PastorDawson06 »

I am using BW10, I exited the program as usual although I recall seeing that there were 2 BW programs open at the same time.

When I returned, I saw an error message that said the program had closed with an abnormal termination.
Fault Module Name - BW1000.exe
Exception Offset - 005b4288
Exception Code c0000417
Subroutine Address = 001:005b3276
Subroutine Name = __invoke_watson.

I have deleted BW and reinstalled the program in its fullest version. When I try to open the program it displays the initial build window, the dialogue text runs at the bottom, but when it appears to finish everything simply disappears and BW does not open.

I admit that I am not extremely computer savvy, I can get around so I am seeking wiser minds to assistance me in restoring the use of BW.

Thank you in advance

Pastor Dawson,

This problem should not be difficult to solve because I learned about a very useful utility form a local computer technician. There is an uninstall program that has helped me with some similar nasty problems, NOT with BibleWorks, but problems similar to what you describe.

It is called 'Revo Uninstaller' and it is freely available online at URL https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo-un ... -download/ . You do NOT need to purchase anything, just download the free version and install it. You should now be able to uninstall BW and reinstall it afterwards.

Download and run Revo Uninstaller. BibleWorks should show up in the list of installed application programs.

NB: I have never tried to uninstall BW specifically so some of the later Revo steps may or may not be needed. I have recently experienced three very difficult install/uninstall cycles on a new system and Revo pulled me out of the fire--can't vouch for a BibleWorks uninstall but my experience with Revo has been very positive. A simple utility that does its job very well. By using it to uninstall BW, a clean BW install should work better due to the peculiarities of the Windows platform. Your difficulties do seem to be beyond your control.

Here are the steps to run Revo Uninstaller for uninstalling BW:

1. Start "Revo Uninstaller" after you install it.
2. Select BibleWorks from the list of your installed programs and click the "Uninstall" icon at the top of the Revo window.
3. Two things show up, the BibleWorks uninstaller itself and a Revo status screen with "Scanning modes" of "Safe", "Moderate", and "Advanced". Leave the Revo status screen alone for now.
4. Locate the BW uninstaller window and run it as you would normally.
5. When the BW uninstaller has finished, locate the Revo status window again.
6. Select "Advanced" on that window.
7. Select "Scan" from that window. Two cleanup steps are available--you will probably use both of them.
8. First, a list of leftover registry items shows up, if any. It may take a while, but the Revo "Advanced" option will find ALL leftover registry items from the BW uninstall.
9. Click "Select All" followed by "Delete" on that window and confirm the deletion.
10. Click "Next" to go to the list of leftover files.
11. Similarly, click "Select All" followed by "Delete" on that window and conform that deletion also.
12. That's it. Close Revo Uninstaller.

You should be able to reinstall BW without problems. Please send me a private message if you need further assistance.

This error is actually coming from the Microsoft C Runtime (c0000417) -- as BibleWorks does not use its own handler, this is unfortunately most likely a problem with your Windows installation and not BibleWorks itself. What version of Windows are you using? Have any changes been done to it recently? When the reinstallation of BibleWorks closes is the executable still running in task manager or has it actually terminated? If it has terminated what does the log in in Event Viewer in Applications, say?

EDIT: Another important thing to know is if there are any antivirus programs -- although Event Viewer's logs would most likely expose this if that's truly the problem (which I also doubt).

Dear Hupostasix,
I am using Windows 11. I tried to find the Event Viewer, but I am not sure what I'm looking for. There have been a number of Windows updates that have been done and I believe your initial thought might be correct, this seemed to happen following a Windows Update. If that means BW10 no longer functions on my computer... well that is disappointing. I did switch from ExpressVPN to PC Matic.

When I reinstalled BW10 both initially in my original board and today following the Uninstaller instructions below, the installation closed and nothing appeared to be left running. It did not give me the option to run or open the program, so I tried to double click to open but the same failure occurred. I just attempted to open BW10 with the task manager open and when the BW10 stopped it disappeared from the Task Manager as well.

Dear Daniel Lydick,
The Revo Uninstaller seemed to be a great step. I appreciate your instructions. I carried it out and reinstalled BW10 again. Unfortunately, with the same results. It went through the initiation steps but then stopped its initiation and all activities ended. I tried to direct message you but the board says I do not have access to that feature.

I appreciate both of your consideration of my dilemma and your suggestions.

I have tried to make sure BW is not blocked in my antivirus, I tried to open the program as an administrator all with no success.

If I went back to BW9, would that make any difference?

Oh yes, Microsoft is causing havoc for our clients with their poorly audited Windows 11 updates. I had suspected as much but thanks for confirming.

After you attempt to open BW10 again (so it regenerates a fresh log after terminating), on your keyboard you should have a windows key, you will want to press that with the R key (Win key + R). That should bring up the run menu. Type "eventvwr" and then enter.

Once it loads up and you've recently attempted to open BW10, you'll want to choose "Application" under Windows Logs. Try to find if anything pertaining to BibleWorks, you can see below in this example, this error log is for a program called "TreeSize":

While in theory it's possible it might, we really need to know what Windows 11 has changed. One thing you could try (for the sake of experimentation) is enabling compatibility on your BibleWorks shortcut. Right click, choose properties, go to the compatibility tab, enable "run this program in compatibility mode" and choose the latest version of Windows it has (it may be Windows 10 or Windows 8). Then click okay, try again.

EDIT:

P.S. if you haven't already, *restart* the machine so that it fully clears itself. Microsoft has changed Windows so now it uses what's known as hybrid boot/fast startup (it unfortunately carries a lot of determintal aspects to it, but that's another story). Shutting down a Windows machine no longer truly shuts it down and clears everything out, so you must always choose restart.

PastorDawson06,
Was this ever fixed?
Reinstalling BW should always work. But you need to remove the BW folder before reinstalling. Or just rename it if you have stuff you want to keep. You also need to reboot before reinstalling and disable your anti-virus temporarily before reinstalling and you will have to go through the activation procedure described in the opening screen of the forum.
Let me know what your status is.

Hupostasix,
It has taken me a couple of days to attempt your suggestions. Thank you for the examples it made it possible for me to understand and find the items you pointed me to find.

I did open the event viewer and found the error message as you had presumed. I went into Properties on the icon and switched to compatibility using Windows 8, which was the last edition on my list. When I clicked to open, I chose to update the flash viewer, it took a longer time to run through the initiation process, but in the end the result was the same, it simply vanished without opening.

I have rebooted my computer several times, still not change.

This is truly disappointing; I did a great deal of my original language study in BW.

Mike,
I have tried the suggestions that several have suggested.
Uninstalling BW (using Revo Uninstaller and removing all of the folders) and then reinstalling it with all the antivirus software off.

I have not made any progress in getting BW10 to initiate and run. It does make me ask again whether removing BW10 and installing BW9 would be a possibility, but Hupostasix makes me think this is a Windows issue and not even an earlier version of BW would overcome the issue.

I will try the reinstall step again and if I need to reapply to the forum, I am glad to do so.
I appreciate everyone's time.

Mike,
I have done another uninstall, after the Revo Uninstaller completed I searched for another BW files and found a backup folder. I deleted this as well. I restarted my computer and began the reinstall procedure. This time it actually brought up the Activation screen, this is progress. I have requested a reactivation code and am waiting to receive this. I am hoping to get back to using BW10.
Thank you for your attention.
