Searching for words beginning a verse

As of June 15, 2018 BibleWorks ceased operation as a provider of Bible software tools. The old BibleWorks web site, activation server and forum are gone. This new forum is intended to provide a way for the thousands of people still using BibleWorks to communicate with one another. Click on "General BibleWorks Discussion" above to view messages.Or you can jump directly to two topics of general interest to everyone:

To post to this forum you must register your account. After you register and accept the TERMS OF USE, you will be sent an e-mail. You must respond to this e-mail and be activated by an administrator before you can post. This is necessary to limit the use of this forum for spam.

We get a LOT of forum registrations that we cannot activate because we got no response to the confirmation e-mail that was sent. A few are returned as undeliverable and we assume that they are spammers. We have no way of knowing if the other confirmation e-mails were even received. If you registered and never received the confirmation e-mail, you can send a message to forum@biblework.com. But check your spam folder first. Of course you are free to browse messages without registering. You just can't post to the forum or respond to messages.

Searching for words beginning a verse

Post by elnwood »

I want to be able to search for words beginning a verse. I can do this in Graphical Search Engine by selecting "Specify position in verse" and entering "1". Can this be done from the command line? It would make generating these searches faster.

You can do this in limited situations, using "Regular Expression Searches".
In BW online help, select "Index" and look for "Regular Expression Searches".
To find all verses in NRS that begin with "God ", with Search Vesion = NRS, key in <~^(God )> (omitting the <>) and enter.

Limitations:
1. Regular Expression Searches (RES) cannot be done on Greek or Hebrew versions.
2. RES are case sensitive so the above search would not find "god". It will also not find "God,"
3. Using RES in other languages is tricky. I only tried German, French, and Spanish. Non of them have the tilda on their keyboard, so I ended up copying the "~^" from Notepad.
4. RES bypasses most of BW's search functionality. Highlighting, statistics, etc. may be unreliable.

Given the limitations to RES, I would use the Graphical Search Engine, entering the basic search on the command line and then using F9 or the Button Bar button to invoke the GSE, and update the position parameter in the appropriate Word Box.

Hi Jim,

Thank you for your help. I'm running this search for Hebrew, so it sounds like GSE is my only option. It's nice to know Regular Expression searches exist, though.

Blessings,
Don
