keep multiple tabs open on the taskbar?

a lot of the features that I'm using a lot lately are features which launch in their own windows. I notice that when I minimize them, a tab shows up on the taskbar so I can get back to them, but when I bring them up their tab disappears. Is there a way to keep the tab for each window visible on the task bar? I want to switch frequently between windows, but I don't want to have to click to minimize each one before moving on to another.

In most of the windows, you should be able to left-click in the top left corner. This gives you a number of options (e.g. "minimize," "maximize," "close," etc.). At the very bottom of this list is an option that says "make desktop window." Click this and it should be what you're looking for.
