Question Ancient Bible translations in BibleWorks. Why not?

    Dear developers of BibleWorks,

I am a student of bibleistique dept. of Moscow Theological Seminary. For study we need in ancient texts of Bible translations (Greek, Aramaic, Syraic, Coptic, Georgian, Old Armenian [Grabar]). Only one software has such texts - Slavic Bible http://www.sbible.boom.ru/indexe.htm . But it has not fine Hebrew&Greek tools as BW. Why you haven't these text in your very good program? It has public domain and, I think, many users interest in their.

Slavic Bible has middle English Bible texts too: West Saxon, Wycliffe, Tyndale, Coverdale, Bishops, etc: http://www.sbible.boom.ru/engbible.htm . English users may be interest in it too.

I looked at the site and I think that it would be a great to add those English translations (I know nothing about anything else) to those already included with BibleWorks.

I certainly would be extremely interested in comparing these early translations with our more modern ones.

The Version Database Compiler (VDC) exists for just this reason (click Tools | Version Database Compiler and then click Help for details). Basically all you need is a copy of the desired text formatted according to the requirements of the VDC. Lots of versions have been done already. See the Master List Of BW Add-ons Created By Users, the top most thread of this forum. You can examples for download listed under VERSION DATABASES. Many other versions not listed there have also been done, but cannot be posted for copyright reasons. Many Wycliffe Bible translators compile their translations as well.

A good way to practice with the VDC is to export a bible version from BibleWorks and then import it again using the VDC.

Others on the forum who share your interest in these versions may be willing to help you acquire the text you want and then put it in the format required for the VDC.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Dear Mr.Charlie,

Thanks you very much for answer. I am not expert in your product, we use BW on notebook of our Greek teacher. On lessons. He has 5 version of BW. Is it this function? Why you not made these public domain texts (ancient and middle English) in base pack of BW?

Yes, BibleWorks 5 also has the VDC.

We have not included these texts because we are not a large organization and we do not have the manpower required for the creation and maintenance of the large number of esoteric texts available. We do however appreciate the need some people to have access to these texts in BibleWorks, which was the main reason for creating the VDC.

    Dear Morozoff,

It is great to see you are using BibleWorks in your study.

Yes, the feature Charlie refers to is in version 5 as well.

What many people may not realize is BibleWorks only has two primary people who do all the programming. There are a couple of other who help format texts, but that is it! They are not a big operation.

Their desire is to keep their expenses down so they can keep the price down. I am sure Mike and others would like to see these text included as well. There is just so much a few guys can do and they have to make choices. If they hired more people to do the work then the price of the program would have to increase.

On the other hand, if a couple of users want to get the texts and format them via the VDC they could be made available here on the forum. In addition, Mike may go ahead and include them as downloads or in the next version or something.
