If you open the Lexical & Grammatical Help in Matt. 6:8, you will discover that BDAG has avnoi,gw as one of its references for this verse (run your cursor over any of the Greek in SCR or GNT in order for BDAG to display this word in the L&G box).

I confirmed with the printed edition that this is an accurate entry (pg. 84, #5).

Is this an error in BDAG???

I believe it says Mat. 6:8 with the letter D after it, meaning that avnoi,gw vis found in a reading in D for Mat. 6:8. If you open your NA27 or the like you should see that indeed D has a reading that changes aivth/sai auvto,n to anoixai to stoma.

You are absolutely correct. I don't use BDAG that much and I wasn't aware that it rendered tc citations. Good catch, and thanks for the info.

PS -- BW, see the comma after a;nqrwpwn in my signature? I reported this a couple of versions ago, I believe. The printed edition of the TR contains the comma. SCR doesn't. Please supply the comma.

Matt. 6:8... BDAG has avnoi,gw ... Is this an error in BDAG

At first I thought it might be a misprint, for example meaning Mt 7:8; however, look at Tischendorf apparatus, which has it for this reason:

o pat) umwn (1. (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('m_t8-1'))1. (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('m_ga-1'))al hmwn, al7 syrp (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('ve-syr')) aethcod (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('ve-aeth')) Or1,204 (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('cf-Or')) [om um)] add o ouranioj, item X (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('u_t8-X'))033 (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('u_ga-033'))--ouranoij): a* (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('u_t8-_h_a'))01 (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('u_ga-01'))B (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('u_t8-B'))03 (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('u_ga-03'))sah (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('ve-sah')) praem o qeoj | ait) auton: D (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('u_t8-D'))05 (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('u_ga-05'))h (http://javascript<b></b>:idxWin('ve-h')) anoixe to stoma

Instead of "...before you ask him" a couple western witnesses have "...before you open your mouth".

Yes, I was well aware of the variants, which is why I was in the verse in the first place, as this is one of Aleph's and B's expansions - o qeoj o pathr umwn - and one is never surprised at D's ludicrous embellishments. At least Beza, to his credit, who discovered D, had sense enough (and unction enough) not to include its readings in his text, unlike Tischendorf, who discovered Aleph and subsequently became its worshipper.

But I wasn't aware until now that BDAG issued tc notations.

Sorry I posted the Tischendorf note; only after I had done that did I note that others had already responded with mention of the alternate readings. Didn't mean to go for redundancy.

The forward to BDAG 1st ed. says, "We have included a few words not in Bauer... words... that appear in the apparatus of the latest editions of the Nestle text" (BDAG, 2nd ed, vi.).
