Dear Friends,

I recieved the recent 2005-Edition of the Greek Text some weeks ago from M. Robinson. The unparsed text was easy to transform and install. But I can't handle the parsed text, which has the following coding scheme:

1:1 biblov 976 {N-NSF} genesewv 1078 {N-GSF} ihsou 2424 {N-GSM} cristou 5547 {N-GSM} uiou 5207 {N-GSM} dauid 1138 {N-PRI}uiou 5207 {N-GSM} abraam 11 {N-PRI}
1:2 abraam 11 {N-PRI} egennhsen 1080 5656 {V-AAI-3S} ton 3588 {T-ASM} isaak 2464 {N-PRI} isaak 2464 {N-PRI} de 1161 {CONJ} egennhsen 1080 5656 {V-AAI-3S} ton 3588 {T-ASM} iakwb 2384 {N-PRI} iakwb 2384 {N-PRI} de 1161 {CONJ} egennhsen 1080 5656 {V-AAI-3S} ton 3588 {T-ASM} ioudan 2455 {N-ASM} kai 2532 {CONJ} touv 3588 {T-APM} adelfouv 80 {N-APM} autou 846 {P-GSM}

Can anyone help ?
Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter,

The best way to see how to encode a text for morphological versions is to export a chunk as a text file.
Here's Mat 1:1-2 in the GNM (Friberg):
Mat 1:1 bi,bloj (n-nf-s) ge,nesij (n-gf-s) VIhsou/j (n-gm-s) Cristo,j (n-gm-s) ui`o,j (n-gm-s) Daui,d (n-gm-s) ui`o,j (n-gm-s) VAbraa,m (n-gm-s)
Mat 1:2 VAbraa,m (n-nm-s) genna,w (viaa--3s) o` (dams) VIsaa,k (n-am-s) VIsaa,k (n-nm-s) de, (cc) genna,w (viaa--3s) o` (dams) VIakw,b (n-am-s) VIakw,b (n-nm-s) de, (cc) genna,w (viaa--3s) o` (dams) VIou,daj (n-am-s) kai, (cc) o` (damp) avdelfo,j (n-am-p) auvto,j (npgm3s)Here's the BGM (BibleWorks Greek NT Morphology):

Mat 1:1 bi,bloj (nnfsc) ge,nesij (ngfsc) VIhsou/j (ngmsp) Cristo,j (ngmsp) ui`o,j (ngmsc) Daui,d (ngmsp) ui`o,j (ngmsc) VAbraa,m (ngmsp)
Mat 1:2 VAbraa,m (nnmsp) genna,w (viaa3s) o` (dams) VIsaa,k (namsp) VIsaa,k (nnmsp) de, (cc) genna,w (viaa3s) o` (dams) VIakw,b (namsp) VIakw,b (nnmsp) de, (cc) genna,w (viaa3s) o` (dams) VIou,daj (namsp) kai, (cc) o` (damp) avdelfo,j (nampc) auvto,j (rpgms)Looking at your example, the Greek words that you have are actually the inflected forms. In a BW morph version, you have the lexical form of a word, followed by a space and then the morphological coding enclosed in parentheses. It also looks as if the morph version you have uses either Strong's or Goodrick-Kohlenberger numbers to key each word to their lexical form. Also, the morphological coding that you have given above is enclosed in brackets.
So, in order to make things work with BW, you would have to:Replace the Strong's/GK numbers with the corresponding lexical form. Replace all parentheses with brackets. Remove all of the inflected forms. Add the appropriate book name abbreviations (e.g., Mat, Mar, Luk, Joh, Act, etc.) to each verse, on each line, followed by a space and then the chapter:verse.
I hope that helps.

Hi Jim,

thanks a lot ! More to do than I thought - as I see a Visual-Basic or C++ application is needed. Without it, I'd just be able for #2 and #4 of your task-list. The "modified BibleWorks Greek Scheme" won't do it easier, Jim ?

I guess the next BW-Version will include this new edition of the - so far unpublished - Robinson/Pierpont 2005 Text.

Anyway, I think I can't handle that on my own - if anyone is interested in the text or in solving the riddle, please let me know: ps2866@bingo-ev.de

Best regards !

Update: 04-07-05
A programmer has agreed to do the transformation but needs a reference list with the strong numbers in combination with the corresponding lexical form.
Has anyone a clue where to get such a list ?
Thank you in advance !
Peter

Peter, I'd contact Mike Bushell at BibleWorks about this. Contact me off-list for his email. I'm not sure if he'd have it, but I think he would, or could get it from the NASB Strongs dictionary.

Also, if your programmer is willing, I have another project that he could do--correlating a list of Septuagint Lexical data to Hebrew Lexical data (and vice versa). Currently it's all based on Strongs numbers, but I'd like to have it with strongs and with lexical forms.

Dear Jim,

sure, I'll ask him ! If you'd describe what the programm should provide he could give an answer. He is a professional C++-programmer, is highly qualified and has helped me a lot in prepairing Greek-texts for BW already.

Best regards
