In Matthew 24:1, there are some scribal markings to the left of the word "kai". What do these marks mean and where can one find information about how to read the scribal notes in the images?

These refer to the Eusebian canon section numbers. This was a method used (and still retained in NA27) to mark Gospel harmonies. A basic textual critical book will tell you something about them. You can also try Googling it. Here's one brief explanation (http://www.textcrit.com/tc001/eusebian.htm).

You can download a synopsis version of the Eusebian canons in BibleWorks via the BibleWorks blog (http://bibleworks.oldinthenew.org/?page_id=144).
