View Full Version : Search on Lemma

What would be the command to do a search on lemma in the BNT; for all words occurring three times or less in the NT; and limit the display to a book or chapter?

Then, what would be the command to do the same kind of search but limit the count to a particular author (i.e. Paul) or book (i.e. Mark)?

Thanks,
David

David,

I'd like to try to help you, but I'm not sure exactly what it is you are trying to do. If you are trying to search on a lemma, you will need to select a morphologically-tagged version, which for BNT is BNM. Your command line search will then be a "Search on Lemma." Or if you have the word you wish to search in your browser (in any form), you can right click on that word and select "Search on Lemma."

For limiting your search to a particular range, double-click on the word "Limits" at the bottom left of your screen. You can limit your search to any book or chapter you wish, or to a custom search range (including the preset "Paul").

As to your phrase "for all words occurring three times or less in the NT," I am stumped as to how a search on a single lemma could accomplish that.

I may not have answered your question at all, but if you can provide more information I will be glad to try again.

You must also use the word list. The classroom tips don't directly address your example, but I believe if you read them and experiment, you'll see the process you need to follow. Just use 3 times rather than 50 for word occurrence.

I'm sorry I was not clear. Here's what I'm trying to accomplish in BW8:
In the process of reading through the NT, I like to get an initial "report" of all words which occur 1 to 3 times in the NT; limited to the chapters I am reading that day; and listed out by verse. This particular search for Mt. 5 would have 17 hits in 14 verses.

Typically I will "mark up" my GNT accordingly. This forces me to sight read everything that occurs 4x or more. When it is unnecessary I can easily erase the small notes.

I hope this makes sense. It is "Sakae Kubo" thing; where I end up with my own Greek Reader.

In Accordance I would use [COUNT 1-3] <AND> [RANGE mat 5]. The count is based on entire NT; but could be limited to author.

Here are a few items that may be useful to you.

Classroom Tip 2.3: Analysis Window Frequency Filter
http://www.bibleworks.com/classroom/2_03/index.html

This Tip 2.3 shows you how to restrict the Analysis Window so that it only provides parsing and lexicon information for the words that appear fewer times than the number you set. This by itself might supply everything that you need.

In conjunction with the previous Tip 3.3 that was recommended to you, you might also want to create a color file for those words. Here is a tip that discusses that, though it was written for the BibleWorks 7 Text Coloring Tool, which is a little different than the tool in BibleWorks 8:

Tip 1.7 Highlight Words Used 50 or More Times

Thanks for the links. Using tip 1.7 I was able to create something close to what I was looking for, but it seems far more awkward than necessary.

The idea of getting a list of the verses for a select range that contain words that occur at a certain frequency may not be very useful to other users. I was able to get a list via tip 1.7; but if I try to do a lemma search to further analyze the word I lose the list and have to reload the iel. Sometimes I'm just trying to get a quick feel for the vocabulary of particular writer; and a quick and dirty command got it done in A. I'm on pace to read through the GNT twice a year, so this exercise is becoming less needful. But I have found it useful in the past.

I originally purchased Accordance because I wanted the CNTTS apparatus; which I know is coming to BW. So I have used it more than BW. But now being able to easily link to Willker's commentary, and links to Bezae, Vaticanus, Sinaiticus, and the Freer Collection, is very cool!
