Searching on Accents or Cantillations(Ta'amin)

In BibleWorks it is easy to search for individual accents/Cantillations as well as on specific combination of them in the Hebrew Bible.

Currently, BibleWorks is the only commercially available software, I know of on the Windows platform, that allows for searching the cantillations/accents of the Tanach/Hebrew Bible.



Let's say you'd like to search for every occurrence of the Mereka accent in the WTM.
(1) Enable the [B]Permit accent code searching in Hebrew morph. version(s) option.

(2)Select the WTM database as you search version

(3)Then on the command line type:
.*@*Zy*

[Note: in WTM "Z" stands for accent and indicates you are sreaching for one. The letter following "Z", "should be the specific accent code you are looking for, In this case that letter is "y" which stands for the Mereka accent".]

After, conducting that search you'd like to know which verse Mereka is immediately followed by a Pashta:

(1) So, you return to the command line
(2) You keep in mind that Hebrew searches are right to left
(3) Then on the command line you enter:
'*@*Zc* *@*Zy*

This yields you 286 hits in in 283 verses.

As, mentioned above there are two database we can use to search for accents. Previously, we used the WTM now let's try the JDP.

In the JDP database to search on every occurrence of the Mereka in the prose books of the Hebrew Bible we would type the following on the command line:

.*@*+Ua*


And, if we wanted to find the remaining appearances of Mereka in the poetic books we would then enter:

.*@*+Na*


Mereka immediately followed by Pashta in the Prose books might look something like:
'*@*+Jc* *@*+Ua*

By the way, though one and the same accent system is used in the Pentateuch and the Prophets, the chanting melody is different for each accent depending on whether you are reading from the Torah or Nevi'im. The Megillot (Esther, Lamentations) have yet a distinct melody in turn.

There are also different melodies for the Torah its' self for example:



A melody for reading in public (10 or more people)
A Private study melody (rarely used these days)
A high holiday Melody
Two sets for the Ten commandments/words
Not, to mention the fact that each historical world community has it's own Nusach נוּסַח or Tradition for reading these accents and pronouncing some of the vowels.

I didn't forget that. (I was a professional Torah reader for 15 years.) I just didn't include that info in my post. Thank you for your completeness. But, alas, you have forgotten something. :) The shirah - the song of Moses, Exo 15 - also has its own niggun.
