Hey Mark, I'd be curious to know your take, so far, on the new version. Also, which base package did you opt for? I've heard that the new interface takes some getting used to. Some actually report not liking it at first, only to have it grow on them with time. Anyway, if you're up for it, I'd love to hear your preliminary impressions. Thanks, Irving.

Hello Irving,

I am not Mark, but if you really want his take on Logos why not scan his blog? He already reviewed it there. Click and see:

Further reviews/comparisons are coming...
So far, I've >come to like< the new features and interface in Logos4. I was accustomed to the old way, so it's taking me a while to find the new ways of doing stuff. In the end, I think it is a definite improvement despite some issues.

I seem to remember that I got the base Logos engine from a free download. I do have two or three modules for Logos, and I can't really tell from their website, but I'm wondering if the Logos 4 engine itself is free? Or do you actually have to buy a package in order to get the Logos 4 engine?

The Logos4 engine is free, but they have not promoted it yet, since they are trying to handle any issues that arise w/ people who are doing upgrades or crossgrades. If you just upgrade the engine to Logos4, you will lose a bunch of functionality you have in Logos3. (That's why they are encouraging you to buy a crossgrade from 3 to the full 4 or to do an upgrade to a next level up library.) So, for now, if you are not planning on buying anything extra, I'd say stay with Logos3.

You're not alone. A number of individual users have reported not being immediately enamored of the new interface in Logos 4, only to have grown to like it over time. I've got Logos 4 on order. They won't actually ship it out until January 4. But I've already started watching their training videos. When you talk about there being issues, do you refer to what Logos terms "the missing features?" Apparently, there were good features that were standard with Logos 3, but have been temporarily discontinued in Logos 4. The company is working on restoring many of those according to their website. They actually have a timeline and project dates to restore some of the missing features in 2010.

Thanks for the heads-up on that. I'm going to read your reviews carefully and then perhaps down the road see if I'm interested in purchasing one of the packages you recommend to your students.

As you note, some features are missing for now but will eventually be added in. The 'issues' mostly relate more to the download and updating and indexing times. I had to leave my system run overnight a couple times...
It's also harder to manage some personalized settings, but that may be simply that I can't find them in the new system. Still learning...

Thanks. All in all, the reviews seem to be quite favorable. I look forward to trying out the new engine. By the way, are you still running Logos 3? Apparently, you can continue to run them contemporaneously until such time as you're either thoroughly comfortable with the new version, or until the coveted missing features have been added.

Yes, I do have both Logos3 and Logos4.
I'm mainly keeping Logos3 to link into from BW8. Once those kinks get figured out, I'll probably remove Logos3.

Thanks again for the response. I'll probably hang onto Logos 3 for a while until I learn the ropes in Logos 4. (I haven't received my Logos 4 order yet; they won't ship my order until January 4) Do you actually have all of your resources installed twice, once in a Logos 3 directory and once in a Logos 4 sub-folder? That would strike me as hogging a lot of hard disk space.

Keeping 3 for a while is a good idea. Logos 4 looks much better than version 3 does. One thing that I like about version 4 is that it automatically downloads all of the resources that I have a license for. Loading up all of the add-ons everytime I install version 3 is a pain. I change out operating systems a lot for various reasons and when I have to install Logos 3 it is no fun. Version 4 is VERY easy to get all of my resources loaded into - in fact I can go watch Mr. Ed or Gilligan's Island for a while and Logos sets itself up with my resources. That part of Logos 4 is sweet.

:)

Wow, I haven't seen Gilligan's Island for a lot of years. Are you watching those episodes on cable TV or DVDs? I used to love 'Get Smart.' I'd love to see reruns of that show come back.

Thanks for the links. Nothing like old time TV for nostalgia, huh?
