View Full Version : Unicode and Babylonian vowel pointing for Aramaic?

Does anyone know of a Unicode (or even non-Unicode) font that carries "Babylonian vowel points" for Aramaic text? Below is a scan of Sperber's The Bible in Aramaic that shows the vowel pointing system in question. As you can see, it differs from the Tiberian vowel pointing used in the BHS.

The Hebraica II Supra font available from Linguist's Software contains the supra-linear vowels of the Babylonian system.
You can E-mail them at email@example.com

I'd like to see these points used instead of "translating" into Tiberian, since there are differences between the two.

Click on the link below this paragraph and scroll down to the Hebraica II Supra font and you will see two sample lines of text. The first line as that font with the Tiberian nikkudot above the letters, but the 2nd line has the Babylonian nikkudot. So, it appears you can chose either one. I am not sure as I have never used this font, but you can give them a call they may have something not listed on their site as well. In the mean time I'll check some contacts at Typophile (http://www.typophile.com/) someone there may have some advice.
(1) If you do not mind typesetting in LaTex/TeX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaTeX) there is a free program called Makor (http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/language/hebrew/makor/tex/makor2/mkr2man.pdf#search=%27Babylonian%20hebrew%20fonts% 27) that has the Babylonian Nikkudot. Go to page 31 of the PDF link.
(2)Try searching for SPDamascus (thinner Hebrew font with Palestinian as well as Tiberian vowel points)
