Hi all the staff!

I downloaded the latest BW executable update (GREAT!!!)
and I have just a little problem: I don't see the latest Apostolic
Fathers update - Apostolic Fathers (Rev 1 6.0.007r) - from inside
BW ("Check for Web Updates") but only from my browser, why?

Can I download this update from my Internet Explorer, double
click on it and manually install it?

Thank you for your wornderful job!!! http://www.bibleworks.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

A few questions:
Since I have user databases not included in the book names in this post, I added the Qumran book names to my own .bna file. When I "Check consistency" I get the error message: "The entry <4Q541> is a reserved internal name and cannot be used as an alias. Namelist not saved."
When I look at the list of book names, 4Q541 appears twice, once as "4Q541 Aaron A" and again as "4Q541 Testament of Kohath."
Apparently this is an error which needs to be fixed.

Secondly, concerning the Josephus book names:
I personally would prefer to display the books with the standard (Whiston ?) names:
Ant "Antiquities of the Jews" (as you have it)
Jwr "Wars of the Jews" (not just "war" in singular or "Jewish" as an adjective)
and Lif "Life of Flavius Josephus"
What does anyone else think?

Answer:
The last database update is Rev 1 6.0.010r (not 07r). It is for Josephus, not for the Apostolic Fathers. The Apostolic Fathers updates are not officially from BibleWorks but are available only as user databases, which you can download from Jim Darlack's web site (see the Thread "Master List of BW Add-ons Created by Users") and install via the "Version Database Compiler" in the BibleWorks "Tools" menue. I hope I understand your question properly.

The APF update was inadvertently pasted to the web page showing current updatres. It was being passed to someone for development purposes. We will post an update soon but without morphology. The good news is that we have started in earnest on the morphology and hopefully it will be available by the end of the year.

God bless,
Mike

Hi Mark,
I fixed the typo. It'll be n the next update, but in the mean time I would just suggest making the change in an editor. I am open to any name changes that people want to suggest.

Hi Mike!!!

After the update I see all the complete names for the QST module, but
NOT for Apostolic Fathers and Josephus!
The books.bna file is updated and correct, but for some reasons
BW6 DON'T read it in full (only QST!).http://www.bibleworks.com/forums/images/icons/icon9.gif

I use BW6 under Windows 98.

Any help appreciated!

I have applied this update (several times), but the book for Josephus, etc. do not appear. Moreover, when I go to my books.bna file and open it with NotePad, there are not entries fro Josephus, etc.

(Bible Works is installed on my D: drive instead of C:, because D: is much larger and I don't want to fill up C:. Could this be part of the problem?)

Dear Andy,

The books.bna file should automatically install in your init folder in the BibleWorks 6 directory, so it doesn't matter which hard drive contains BibleWorks (I have the same setup as you).

Are you looking in the BibleWorks 6 init directory, or do you perhaps still have a BibleWorks 5 directory on one of your hard drives? BibleWorks 6 has always had some abbreviations for Josephus. BibleWorks 5 never had any. None of them says "Josephus." They say Jwr, Ant, Lif, and Apn.

Are you using the books.bna file or are you using an alternate .bna file? An alternate .bna file was made available which used different book abbreviations, those use more by scholars (it is called books_sbl.bna). If you are using that alternate .bna file, it obviously wouldn't have the updated book names in the latest books.bna file.

To find which .bna file you are using, within BibleWorks click "Options" then "Book Names". On the line under the "Book Names" tab you'll see the full path and name of your books?.bna file.

You have two alternatives.
1) If you want to change to the updated books.bna file click "Open" then you'll see a list of available .bna files. Click on the books.bna file. Then click "Open" and after it is loaded click on "OK."

2) If you want to keep parts of your present .bna file, but add the updated names for Josephus, etc., with BibleWorks closed, in "My computer" find the books.bna file in the BibleWorks 6 init folder. Open it with Wordpad or Notepad, and find the lines for the booknames you need (probably Josephus, Apostolic Fathers, and Qumran). Copy them. Open the books_sbl.bna file (or whichever .bna file you are using) using Wordpad or Notepad. Paste the copied lines in the appropriate place in the file you have been using (you'll have to cut the Josephus, Apostolic Fathers, and Qumran lines already there). Then save the file and open BibleWorks.

One of these methods should give you the desired update in book names.

Your old classmate,
Mark Eddy

Since there are various standard ways of citing, it wouldn't be possible to display "the standard". For example, I would prefer the following (SBL Style):
* Life
* J.W.
* Ant.

Another issue is the versification standard. BW uses Whiston's, but the standard I'm used to seeing and using is another (e.g., Loeb's). It would be nice to have the ability to browse to references using Loeb's, and to cite either way.
