View Full Version : Problem with LXT and BLM?

With BLM or LXT as the search version, enter “1Ki 2:35” on the command line and this is what I get on the Browse window for NAU, for example:

1Ki 2:35, 3:1, and 9:15 displayed one after another, but 1Ki 9:15 also includes verses 17, 18, 23,24, 25 in the same block.

But for LXE the display is not the same:

1Ki 2:35, 4:34, 9:15, and a long 10:22, but 1Ki 9:15 shows verve numbers only for 17, 18, 23, and 25.

At the same time, LXT shows a very long single verse ending with “[“, while BLM is also very long but ending with the word is ᾅδης@ngmsc which is not found in LXT.

Now individually entered on the command line, the following verses are empty for LXT:

1Ki 3:1, 9:15, 9:17, 9:18, 9:24, 9:25

but LXE is empty only for verses 9:18 and 9:25, while BLM shows empty verses for all of them. At the same time BGT varies showing 2:35; 2:35, 5:14; 2:35, 9:9; 2:35, 10:22; and 2:35, 5:14, 10:22.

When adhs is entered on the command line with the search version of BLM, 1Ki 2:23 shows the same thing as above, but the last part of the apparently same long list of words for BLM on the Browse window is as follows: πολιά@nafsc αὐτός@rpgms ἐν@pd αἷμα@ndnsc εἰς@pa ᾅδης@ngmsc.

Is this only my local problem, or do you get the same strange results?

Thanks,

Yaku Lee

This is not a problem. It is the result of the verse mapping files for these versions. LXT 1Ki 2:35 is extremely long. It translates the Hebrew from all those other verses. So BibleWorks "maps" LXT (and BGT, BLM, and BGM) to those verses in WTT. That way a BibleWorks user will know that the LXX "translators" did not just "make up" these words, but they combined the information from other places in the Hebrew Bible into this verse. And users who read through WTT will be able to see how the LXX translators translated the Hebrew into Greek.
Any other version which contains the verses of WTT will therefore also display with 1Ki 2:35 in LXT. The verse divisions in LXE differ slightly from those of LXT, so the verse numbers which display together differ.

At the same time, LXT shows a very long single verse ending with “[“, while BLM is also very long but ending with the word is ᾅδης@ngmsc which is not found in LXT.
This is the only real problem. Apparently at some time after LXT (and BGT) were first compiled in BibleWorks the last part of 1Ki 2:35 has disappeared. After "[" should come "
11] plh,n ... up through ᾅδης.

Now individually entered on the command line, the following verses are empty for LXT:
1Ki 3:1, 9:15, 9:17, 9:18, 9:23, 9:24

This is because these verse are indeed missing in Rahlfs LXX.

but LXE is empty only for verses 9:18 and 9:25, while BLM shows empty verses for all of them. At the same time BGT varies showing 2:35; 2:35, 5:14; 2:35, 9:9; 2:35, 10:22; and 2:35, 5:14, 10:22.

So, this is not a local problem with you.
I shall notify the proper man at BibleWorks to correct LXT and BGT. But otherwise everything is working as it is supposed to work.
If you would like further explanation of how this works, please ask.

Hi Mark,

It was very nice to know that nothing worked amiss on my side regarding 1Ki 2:35 with BLM or LXT as the search version. It is also encouraging to notice some changes happening on the BW display screen, e.g. the stats at the bottom of the verse list changed overnight from “17 verses, 1.50 sec.” to “17 verses, 17 hits, 1.14 sec.” where “x hits” is now included.

I came upon this “problem” when I was looking for verses in which BLM hasᾅδηςbut WTM does not have שׁאול. When I ran the search operation, the first verse on the verse list was 1Ki 2:35 and I was so perplexed to see what was displayed on the Browse window that for a while I forgot all about what I was looking for.

I find that Est 3:13 also has a very long texts for LXT and LXE, but otherwise it appears normal.

Thank you very much for your expert response to my post.

In my previous post I said: “It is also encouraging to notice some changes happening on the BW display screen, e.g. the stats at the bottom of the verse list changed overnight from “17 verses, 1.50 sec.” to “17 verses, 17 hits, 1.14 sec.” where “x hits” is now included.”

I have to take back what I said, because I now find that the “x hits” part of the stat comes and goes for no apparent reason as I play around with the search engine.
