Ordering a list of Biblical citations

I have a book ready to come out and I am doing an index of biblical citations, using the SBL style. HELP! I thought I could do it in Word in columns and then sort the columns but that does not work; it cannot handle the colon. There must be a program to do this so that I can just enter, e.g., all the citations from Genesis randomly as the occur in the book, and then this angelic program would arrange these in SBL biblical order. Anybody know how to do this?

could you post the word doc with the citations? I would be glad to try writing a macro that would sort correctly. If you didn't want to post the actual citations, you could make a doc with similar citations, that would work, too.
