If a book does not have a numbering system except for chapters then how would you number the material?
Paragraphs or sentences? My inclination is towards paragraphs unless they are huge.

In general I try to go with the most standard numbering, but I also go with whatever is available.
For instance, Tacitus had only paragraph numbers available on Perseus. Some divide those paragraphs into smaller sections, but since that wasn't readily available, I just ignored it. So in BW Book 1 of Tacitus Histories is "chapter 1" and paragraph one of book 1 is "verse 1" of "chapter 1".
For poetry (Homer/Hesiod/drama) I try to make each verse the same as a "line number".
So it all depends. If there are specific textual questions on specific works I can try to advise.
