View Full Version : Will Interlinear Versions Be Included in BibleWorks?

So far, BibleWorks has received few requests for interlinear presentation. In fact, many seminaries discourage interlinear use, believing having someone else's translation under the Greek words is quite counterproductive for people who are learning Greek and want to become proficient at it.

BibleWorks provides alternative features that have apparently proven fully satisfactory for most BibleWorks customers. For example, morphologies and lexical definitions of Greek and Hebrew words are displayed automatically when the mouse cursor is passed over the words.

The technical challenges of interlinear presentation are also nontrivial. Eventually, BibleWorks will probably find and include a suitably flexible and robust format that also addresses transliteration requirements.

While a Greek-English or Hebrew-English Interlinear format, per se, is not facilitated in BibleWorks, there are means by which texts can be arranged to provide the comparison an interlinear text provides.

One has already been mentioned in the original posting, which is to hold one's mouse over each word in certain "tagged" versions, such as the KJV or NAS. Definition and morphological information will display in the Analysis Window and/or a pop-up word tip box. Related to this is the option to display the Strong's numbers for each word, though this provides only a numeric index that must then be looked up in the lexicon.

Another measure that can be used is to display verses in multi-version mode. By displaying one or more English versions with one or more Greek or Hebrew versions, verses can be compared, one-by-one, in the Browse Window.

Yet another measure available for comparing English and original language texts is to display them in parallel windows. This can be initiated from the menu bar command, the toolbar button or by a Command Line entry. Once displayed, the columns can be synchronized so that they will scroll throgh the text together.
