46 The Key Word in Context Window

The Key Word in Context module permits you to construct KWIC Concordances from any Bible version in BibleWorks from any word or group of words. As a byproduct it also produces a collocation table in conjunction with the KWIC table.

The KWIC module can be accessed through the main menu Tools | Analyzing the text | KWIC/Collocation Table Module or on the Browse Window and Browse Tab context menus.

The KWIC Window

A Key Word in Context (KWIC)  Concordance is a listing of all the words that occur in a version shown with their immediate context. The KWIC module in BibleWorks enables you to build KWIC lists for any word or series of words in any Bible version. You can specify how many words either side of the specified words will be shown. The word itself will be shown in red and any surrounding words that had to cross a verse boundary to meet the specified context limits will be shown in gray. A collocation table is a listing of all the words in the immediate context of the key word listed by frequency and distance from the key word. Together the KWIC list and the collocation table provide very useful tools for studying the grammatical and topical context of words.

When you click on a collocation table entry, all the verses represented by that line will be loaded into the KWIC Window. Key words will be show in red and the collocation table words will be in blue.

The KWIC Window is divided into three sections. These are described as follows.

The KWIC Design Section

The top section contains a text entry box where you enter the word that you want to use to build the list, plus several list boxes and buttons that are used to set parameters. This section has the following parts:

This list box is used to select the version for which you want to build the KWIC list and collocation table. It will initially be set to the current search version.

This text entry box is used to set the verse range that you want to use in building the KWIC list and collocation table. It will default to the entire version.

This text entry box is where you enter the word or words that you want to use in building the KWIC list. You can use wild cards and you can enter multiple words. If you search multiple words at the same time, the KWIC module searches for each word individually. Searching on multiple words is essentially an OR search. Phrase searches are not possible in the KWIC module.

   Left

This spin button and text entry box are used to set the number of words to the left of the key word when the KWIC list and collocation table are built. This box will remember the number of words set between sessions of the KWIC module.

   Right

This spin button and text entry box are used to set the number of words to the right of the key word when the KWIC list and collocation table are built. This box will remember the number of words set between sessions of the KWIC module.

 Codes

This spin button and text entry box are used to set the number of codes used in building the KWIC list if your base version is a morphological search. The codes will be truncated to this number of characters. This box will remember the number of words set between sessions of the KWIC module.

This is the button that you click to build the KWIC list and collocation table.

This button reloads the KWIC list. It is needed because when you click on a collocation table entry in the bottom list, the top list will display just the verses associated with that collocation table entry. Clicking on the "Reload" button returns the top list to the full KWIC list.

The KWIC List

This section contains the Key Word in Context list that is generated when you click on the "Build" button. It contains an entry for every occurrence of the keyword with the surrounding context. If it was necessary to cross a verse boundary, the text outside the verse where the word was found will be shown in gray. The key word will be shown in red.

If you want to copy a portion of the list to the clipboard click on the first verse with the mouse, and then click on the last verse with the SHIFT key depressed. This will select a range of items. Then RIGHT click on the selected range and select one of the copy options:

Copy Selected KWIC to Clipboard (formatted)

Copy Entire KWIC List to Clipboard (formatted)

Copy Entire KWIC List to Clipboard (Raw)

Export Verse List to Search Window

Then you can paste the text into your Word Processor or the BibleWorks editor.

The Collocation Table

The collocation table contains a listing of all the words in the immediate context of the key word listed by frequency and distance from the key word.  The frequency is listed by each word in the second column. Subsequent columns contain the number of times the word occurs the specified distance from the key word.

You can sort the list by a particular column simply by clicking on the heading for that column. For example if you click on the "+1 " column you will see a list of all the word occurring immediately after the key word, sorted by frequency.

If you click on the heading for the first column, the list will be sorted alphabetically. In the case of morphological versions clicking on the column one header will alternately sort by word or morphology code. So if you want to sort by morphology code, click twice on the column one header.

When you click on a collocation table entry, all the verses represented by that line will be loaded into the top list. Key words will be show in red and the collocation table words will be in blue.

If you want to copy a portion of the list to the clipboard click on the first verse with the mouse, and then click on the last verse with the SHIFT key depressed. This will select a range of items. Then RIGHT click on the selected range and select one of the copy options:

Copy Selected to Clipboard (formatted)

Copy Entire List to Clipboard (formatted)

Copy Entire List to Clipboard (raw)

KWIC Menu Options

Options

If you click on the Options menu you will see these options:

·         Cross Verses
If this option is selected the KWIC lists will not be limited by verse boundaries. Text outside the verse containing the key word will be shown in gray.

·         Display Brother Text (in KWIC)
If this option is checked the KWIC display will use the brother text to display its word. This permits you to specify a morphological version as the build version, but display the text version in the KWIC list. Typically you would want to search on lexical forms (a morphology version) but display inflected forms (a text version). This option permits that.

Copy

If you click on the Copy menu you will see these self-explanatory options for copying:

Copy Selected KWIC to Clipboard (formatted)

Copy Entire KWIC List to Clipboard (formatted)

Copy Entire KWIC List to Clipboard (raw)

Copy Selected Collocation  List to Clipboard (formatted)

Copy Entire Collocation List to Clipboard (formatted)

Copy Entire Collocation List to Clipboard (raw)
